We’re thrilled to announce the name of Dartmouth North’s newest health clinic! Thank you to everyone who submitted their thoughtful suggestions through our community contest.

The Dr. Maria Angwin Memorial Wyse Road Health Clinic honors Dr. Angwin, the first woman licensed to practice medicine in Nova Scotia, who dedicated her career to women’s health and preventive medicine. The clinic will open in April 2025.

The clinic will connect thousands of Nova Scotians to healthcare services including primary care, gynecology, obstetrics, urology, midwifery, Nova Scotia Brotherhood, Nova Scotia Sisterhood, and more. This clinic space includes a Health Home that will connect over 6000 Nova Scotians in Dartmouth North from the Need a Family Practice Registry to primary care.

With a dedicated team of family physicians, nurse practitioners, obstetricians, midwives, nurses, social workers, dietitians, physiotherapists, and administrative teams, this clinic represents a step forward in healthcare for Dartmouth North.

We would like to extend our appreciation to community members Elisabeth Mohr (Lower Sackville, NS) and Jocelyn Brown (Halifax, NS), whose submissions played a key role in naming the new clinic. 

Their thoughtful suggestion to honour Dr. Maria Angwin helped shape the final name selection, ensuring her legacy as a trailblazer in Nova Scotia’s healthcare history is recognized. This clinic stands as a tribute to Dr. Angwin’s dedication to women’s health and preventive medicine, and we are grateful for the community’s involvement in celebrating her impact.

"Maria Louisa Angwin was the first woman who obtained a license to practice medicine in Nova Scotia in the late 1800. Woman are still largely underrepresented in the medical field however take up 90% of care based roles in the workforce. What better way to represent women in the medical and caretaker based industries than letting it be known they have made their mark here," Elisabeth Mohr.
